The Research Institute of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO) quoted Mohammad-Javad Jafari, head of the fifth season of archaeological excavation at Rivi site, as saying on Tuesday that the most important finding during the current season was part of a columned hall from the Achaemenid era on the southern side of the ancient site of Rivi.

"During the archaeological research works which started in the ancient Rivi site from 2012-2013, archaeologists accessed remains of settlements from the Bronze and Iron Age, the Achaemenid, the Parthian, the Sassanid dynasties and the early Islamic period," he added.

"Based on the studies, various architectural and archaeological evidence from the Parthian and the Sassanid era were discovered in the Rivi site which indicate the sequence of settlement in the area in the aftermath of the Achaemenid era,"Jafari  noted.

"Concurrent with the archaeological group, a team of geomorphology experts from Berlin University and University of Yazd launched studies on the site and its geographical vicinity," Jafari said.

Referring to the archaeological studies at Rivi ancient site jointly undertaken by the Cultural Heritage Department of North Khorasan and the German Archaeological Institute since 2015-2016 with the support of ICHHTO's Research Institute, Jafari said given the scientific and tourism importance of the ancient monument, the group had planned a regular program called 'Rivi Archaeological Project' to conduct excavation and archaeological research at Rivi ancient site.
